Seattle rower, 48, named to Pan American Games

Seattle's John Stillings, 48, has been selected to be the coxswain for the U.S. men's eight crew at the Pan American Games, Aug. 4-10, at Rincon Lake in the Dominican Republic.

Stilling, who rows for the Pocock Rowing Center, was the silver medalist in 1984 L.A. Olympics in the four with coxswain. He also won the gold in the 1984 Pan Am Games in eight with coxswain.

In 1985, he was fourth in the World Championships in four with coxswain, in 1983 he was the gold medalist in Pan American Games in eight with coxswain, and in 1980 he finished fourth in World Championship in lightweight eight with coxswain.

Wang wins PNGA Amateur

Amy Wang, who will play for Washington next season, beat future Pac-10 rival Michelle Timpani of Gig Harbor for the championship of the 102th annual Pacific Northwest Golf Association's Women's Amateur.

Wang, a 2003 graduate of Lake Washington High School playing out of Glendale Country Club, beat Timpani 4-2 in the 36-hole final at Fairwood Golf and Country Club.

Wang had a strong hold on the match at 5-up after 18 holes. But Timpani, a sophomore-to-be on the Oregon golf team, held on strong in the afternoon to take Wang to the 34th hole, where Wang made a putt for par on the 16th green to end the match and win her first PNGA women's Amateur.

Joan Edwards-Powell, a recent inductee into the PNGA Hall of Fame, added yet another championship to her impressive résumé when she won the PNGA Women's Mid-Amateur. Edwards-Powell, playing out of Portland's Columbia Edgewater Country Club, beat Stefanie Coleman of Tacoma Firs GC 2 and 1 in the 36-hole final.

EWU hires assistant

Jody Sears, an assistant football coach at Army the past three seasons, has been hired as an assistant at Eastern Washington University, where he will take over as EWU's defensive coordinator. Sears graduated from Pullman High School (1986) and Washington State (1991), where he lettered twice for the Cougars as a walk-on wide receiver. He is a former college teammate of EWU head coach Paul Wulff.

Like Wulff, Sears played under head coaches Jim Walden, Dennis Erickson and Mike Price during his career with the Cougars.

Notes

Andrea Sooter, 17, a 2003 graduate of Bellevue Christian High School and incoming freshman at Washington, has been named to the U.S. Junior Women's rowing team. Sooter and teammate Jennie Hansen of Philadelphia will compete in the pairs without coxswain in the World Juniors Aug. 8-9 in Athens.

• Washington State announced the signing of six more athletes of its track-and-field program: D.J. Brown, pole vault, Bellingham (Squalicum HS); John Cassleman, hurdles, Pullman; Terry Alex Jones, long jump, Clovis, Calif.; Matt Knoff, distance, Pocatello, Idaho; Jarrell Nelson, sprinter, Bremerton (Olympic HS); and Drew Ulrick, throws, Spokane (Mead).

• Five international teams, along with the nation's top synchronized swimmers, will compete in the United Airlines Open synchronized swimming championships July 15-19 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
