February focus on black history

George Carruthers

Carruthers, 64, is a rocket astronomy research physicist who developed the first moon-based space observatory, an ultraviolet camera that was carried to the moon by Apollo 16 astronauts in 1972. The camera was positioned on the moon's surface and allowed researchers to search the Earth's atmosphere for pollutants. Carruthers, who was born in Cincinnati, has been the principal investigator for a number of NASA-sponsored space instruments, including a 1986 rocket instrument that obtained an ultraviolet image of Halley's Comet.
