February focus on black history

UW Black Student Union

In January 1968, the University of Washington Afro-American Society changed its name to the Black Student Union (BSU).

Among the BSU's founding members were Larry Gossett (current Metropolitan King County councilman) and Aaron Dixon (who became captain of the Seattle Black Panther Party a few months after the BSU was founded).

On May 20, 1968, members of the BSU staged a sit-in outside UW President Charles Odegaard's office. As a result of the sit-in, university officials agreed to help increase black enrollment at the UW, provide financial support to minority students, recruit minority staff and to create a black-studies program.
