February focus on black history

George Grant

Born in New York to former slaves, George Grant was in 1870 the first black graduate from Harvard Dental School, and became one of the first black dentists.

Interested in the physics of golf, he got the first patent for a golf tee in 1899. Grant gave the tees to friends, but never mass-marketed his invention. When he died in 1910, so did his invention. It was reintroduced in 1921 by another man.
