February focus on black history

York

The first African American to come to the Pacific Northwest is thought to be York, the personal slave of William Clark, co-leader of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806.

According to several accounts, York (the only name by which he's known) was a key member of the Corps of Discovery. But when the journey ended, York was not paid and was forced to resume his pre-expedition duties as Clark's slave. Several accounts say Clark waited at least 10 years after the expedition before freeing York.
