February focus on black history

Sam Smith

After serving five terms in the state Legislature (37th District), beginning with his election in 1958, Sam Smith became the first black member of the Seattle City Council in 1967. His political career spanned four decades.

In April 1968, a week after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., he sponsored an open-housing measure, which the council passed unanimously. An open-housing referendum had been defeated 2-to-1 by Seattle voters four years earlier.

He has been cited as an inspiration by many local minority politicians and was known to have always answered his own phone, saying "Hi, this is Sam."
