Inside pitch: Thornton played basketball at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. Thornton, drafted in the first round by the M's in 1998, almost made the Opening Day roster in 2002. "It didn't work out, but now I feel better than ever," Thornton said. "And I've learned a lot about dealing with a whole different side of baseball, patience with injuries." ... Thornton missed much of 2002 and some of 2003 with arm injuries.
