Noteworthy: The Mariners acquired Santiago from the Detroit Tigers in the trade for shortstop Carlos Guillen. Santiago was the starting shortstop last season for the Tigers, who lost 119 games. His manager was Alan Trammell, a former All-Star shortstop. "Every day he would tell you to be relaxed, to be sure and steady, remind you that when you play short you are the leader of the infield." The Mariners had tried to trade for Santiago two years ago. "I never knew that, but I like it here, with some friends from the Dominican, Rafael Soriano and Julio Mateo. Sometimes you play for your team, but you really are playing in front of all 30 teams, who are always looking."
Quotable: "Let's not talk about last year."
