No. 44 Hiram Bocachica

Pos.: Infielder.

Age: 27, turns 28 Thursday.

Ht.: 5 feet 11.

Wt: 180 pounds.

Bats/throws: Right.

Inside pitch: Bocachica is a non-roster invitee who spent part of last season with the Detroit Tigers. He was drafted by Montreal in the first round in June 1994, the first year Puerto Rico was included in the draft. "It was an honor, and it made me decide to go into pro ball and turn down a scholarship to LSU." Bocachica had just one hit in his first 22 at-bats last season, then was released by the Tigers. "Everyone on the team got off to a bad start, but they picked me as a scapegoat. But I am happy to be with Seattle now and wish Detroit well, and hopefully they'll be better this year."

Quotable: "Size doesn't matter. Ichiro and (Bret) Boone aren't big, yet they can hit a ball as far as anyone at times." — Bocachica, on hitting a home run off Randy Johnson in 2001 that was only the ninth to land in the loge level at Dodger Stadium.
