Feb. weather warmer, drier than normal

Seattle Times staff reporter

February was drier and warmer than usual in the region, National Weather Service (NWS) officials said yesterday.

Weather service meteorologist Jay Neher said the dry weather was from a ridge splitting storm flows north and south of the state.

Mat Moss, a sales associate at Home Depot in South Seattle, said he has noticed more customers coming in to buy gardening supplies. "There's definitely an increase," he said.

But Moss added the busy time doesn't come until May. "It usually peaks on Memorial Day."

The coldest days in the month were Feb. 5, 9 and 10, when temperatures dipped to 31 degrees, but rebounded to reach a record high of 62 on Feb. 12, according to the weather service.

Rainfall for February produced 2.44 inches, 1.83 inches shy of the usual 4.27-inch average, according to the NWS. The wettest day of the year was Feb. 16 when half an inch of rain fell.

Joe Beguhl, meteorologist with Weather Central, Inc., said after today's sunshine, the region likely will see showers until at least Sunday night.
