Notebook: Washington softball gets best of Team Canada, 7-6

The seventh-ranked Washington softball team rallied to edge the visiting Canadian national team 7-6 in eight innings yesterday. The second game of the doubleheader, tied 3-3 after two innings, was then called because of darkness.

In Game 1, the Huskies (13-5) had 14 hits as they overcame a three-run deficit to beat Canada (9-1). The Canadians took the lead in the first inning after a two-run double by Alison Bradley. The Huskies responded in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits — including a two-run single by Sarah Hyatt and a one-run single by Kathy Fiske — to take a 3-2 lead.

Team Canada scored four runs in the fourth to take back the lead, 6-3. But UW rallied again in the sixth, scoring three runs to tie the game. The game then went into extra innings.

In the eighth, playing under international tiebreaker rules (inning starts with runner on second base), UW got the win as Amanda Oleson singled home Rita Roach.

Rower Dauphiny a finalist

Princeton coach Lori Dauphiny, a former rower at Washington, was nominated by USRowing as a finalist for volunteer coach of the year. The winner will be announced in early May.

Dauphiny, a 1985 UW graduate, was on the coaching staff of the U.S. women's rowing team that trained at Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center in January.

Senate bill takes off tax

OLYMPIA — The Senate passed Sen. Pam Roach's Senate Bill 6115, which keeps the Department of Revenue from taxing high-school golf teams who use local golf courses for practice. The bill passed 45-0.

State tax code requires the collection of a tax on any services or property used by an individual. The bill creates an exemption for amusement and recreation services donated to nonprofits and state or local governments.
