No. 30 Mickey Lopez
Pos.: Infielder
Age: 30
Ht.: 5-9 Wt: 170
Bats/throws: Both/right
Inside pitch: Lopez was signed by the Mariners as a free agent last spring, and was the Tacoma Rainiers' MVP, hitting .275 with seven home runs, 41 runs batted in and 20 stolen bases. He has not played a game in the majors.
Make way for A-Rod: Lopez is the answer to this trivia question: Who preceded Alex Rodriguez as shortstop at Westminster Christian High School in Miami? "I was there, but as soon as he came on the team (coach) Rich (Hofman) said, 'We're going to play him at short, we'd like you to move to second.' I said, 'Coach, I've been waiting two years for my turn.' But Alex played short, and I was at second."
Quotable: "You could tell right away (Rodriguez) was special with the glove. But at first he was just an average prep hitter — until the summer before junior year, and he took off."
