Washington baseball powers past Trojans

LOS ANGELES — Zach Clem went 3 for 4 with a home run and four runs batted in as the No. 13 UW baseball team beat USC 13-4 yesterday in Pac-10 action.
Sophomore Matt Kasser (3-0) allowed two earned runs over 7-2/3 innings for the Huskies (32-15-1 overall, 14-6 Pac-10), who are in second place in the conference behind Stanford.
Matt Lane gave UW the early lead with a two-run homer in the second. The Huskies added three more runs in the fourth.
UW pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fifth. Clem and Kyle Larsen singled back to back to begin the inning, then Nick Batkoski singled, bringing home Clem and chasing USC starter Bret Butler (4-3). Later in the inning, Lane doubled home Larsen, and Batkoski scored on a throwing error.
Jon Brewster scored the first run for the Trojans (21-27, 7-10) in the sixth inning, coming home on a sacrifice fly.
Tennis
UW swept visitor Fairfield 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Husky Dea Sumantri beat Taylor Barvoets 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles to clinch the win for UW.
• The Washington men beat New Mexico 4-0 in Round 1 of the NCAA tournament on the Stanford campus. UW junior Christoph Palmanshofer clinched the win by beating Henry Gers at the No. 4 singles, 7-6, 6-4.
Crew
The Western Washington women won the NCAA Division II West region championship as its varsity eight placed first and its varsity four finished third on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Vikings finished with 16 points, one ahead of Humboldt State.
• The Seattle Pacific women's varsity four took the title at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma. The Falcons finished in 7 minutes, 45.1 seconds, and Saint Mary's was second in 7:49.3.
WWU took first place in the men's open four final, covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:54.6.
Golf
The WWU women finished fifth at the eight-team Division II championships in Longwood, Fla. The Vikings had a four-round total of 1,279, and senior Kelly White tied for 10th in the medalist race with a 311.
Rollins College (Fla.) successfully defended its title, winning with a 1,196.
• The Vikings men were ninth at the Division II championships in Deland, Fla., shooting a 1,228.
Track and field
In Tucson, Ariz., Washington State senior Anthony Buchanan won the Pac-10 championship in the men's 100 meters for the second consecutive year. Buchanan's winning time was 10.21 seconds.
UCLA's men's and women's teams won the overall championships. The UW women took sixth, the men eighth. WSU's women finished eighth, with the men taking ninth.
• Chris Randolph and Danielle Ayers-Stamper of Seattle Pacific each qualified for the Division II championships in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, at the Ken Foreman Invitational.
Randolph, a sophomore, won the decathlon with a personal-best 6,881 points. Ayers-Stamper, also a sophomore, finished second in the heptathlon with 4,855 points. Portland's Julie Elliott took first with 5,170 points.
SPU junior Sara Johnson won the javelin (149 feet).
Western Washington's Justin Brewer finished fourth in the men's javelin, but his throw (194-10) met the Division II national provisional qualifying standard.
• Eastern Washington junior Mike Quinn placed third in the hammer throw at the Big Sky outdoor championships in Ogden, Utah. Quinn's throw of 194 feet, 3 inches qualified him for the NCAA regional.
The Eagles men finished in seventh place with 73.5 points, and the women took eighth with 48.5 points.
Other baseball
At UCLA 3, Washington State 1 — The Bruins took the lead in the first inning when Brett McMillan scored from second base on a Wes Whisler single. McMillan gave UCLA the lead for good with an RBI single in the second.
Aaron MacKenzie (5-7) took the loss for WSU (26-21, 6-12 Pac-10) in a complete-game effort. David Johnson (2-2) allowed six hits and one run in 6-1/3 innings for the Bruins (28-24, 9-8 Pac-10).
