WNBA Preview
The rest of the Storm
|
Adia Barnes, forward
Height: 5-11. Weight: 165.
Age: 27, born Feb. 3, 1977 in San Diego.
College: Arizona, 1998.
Hometown: San Diego.
Acquired: Allotted as a free agent by the WNBA on April 25, 2002.
Game time: Barnes tore a ligament in her right knee in July just as she was becoming a more offensive-minded player. She has worked to return, but isn't as confident yet, and has to wear a bulky brace on her right leg. The addition of forward Sheri Sam demoted her to a reserve, but defense will get Barnes on the court. Once she's 100 percent healthy, she'll reassert her offensive game and be a sneaky option for the Storm on the perimeter. Barnes is the most veteran player on the team, entering her seventh professional season. She averaged 5.5 points and 4.1 rebounds in 16 games last summer.
Fashion diva: From her Luis Vuitton bags to her Gucci sunglasses and trendy outfits, Barnes is the clothes maven on a team full of stylish shoppers. She'll round up teammates for spending sprees.
AKA: Adia.
Alicia Thompson, forward
Height: 6-1. Weight: 180.
Age: 27, born June 30, 1976 in Big Lake, Texas.
College: Texas Tech, 1998.
Hometown: Lubbock, Texas.
Acquired: Signed as a free agent in February.
Game time: Thompson had her best season under Storm coach Anne Donovan while both were at Indiana in 2000, averaging 10 points and 5.1 rebounds. Thompson has had three knee surgeries, but is confident she can be reach her previous form. Rebounding is her specialty, but Thompson shot 51.4 percent from the field in 2000 and is a career 44.2 percent shooter entering her fifth season. Donovan will try to keep her as a small forward, but Thompson hopes to handle the pressure inside the paint.
Forensic eye: If it weren't for her mother's concern, Thompson would have gone into criminal justice or forensic studies. Now her curiosity with crime scenes is satisfied through her favorite television show "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." "Blood and guts don't bother me, but food in dishwater? That grosses me out," she said.
AKA: Chelle.
Simone Edwards, center
Height: 6-4. Weight: 164.
Age: 30, born Nov. 17, 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica.
College: Iowa, 1997.
Hometown: Palm Beach, Fla.
Acquired: Allotted by the WNBA in 2000.
Game time: A franchise original, she continues to show glimpses of improvement, despite a dip last season, averaging 4.6 points and 3.9 rebounds compared to 7.4 and 4.4 in 2002. She had a confident exhibition game Sunday, scoring nine points in 13 minutes. Edwards was among the top rebounders in her Italian league this past offseason, and her fun-loving vibe among teammates is irreplaceable — especially since the Storm has six new faces.
Fan fav: Edwards has had a connection with the fans at KeyArena since she pumped up the place the inaugural season. Knowing her disappointing 2003 season could have resulted in being cut, Edwards said she would have missed the fans the most. "There's nothing like the crowd at KeyArena when the fans are screaming," Edwards said. "It makes you want to put on a show for them."
AKA: Simi.
