September wetter, cooler than the norm in Seattle

Seattle Times staff

September came to a close with mostly clear skies, and autumn leaves beginning to fall.

The month was cooler than normal, said Johnny Burg, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office at Sand Point.

The average high in September was 65.3 degrees, compared with a normal high of 70.2 degrees. The average low was 52.3 degrees, compared with a normal average of 51.9 degrees.

Nearly 3 inches of rain fell during the month, and Sept. 10 saw the most rain, .64 inches.

Rainfall so far this year — 20.88 inches — is below the average of 22.35 inches.

Nothing to worry about, says Susan Stoltzfus, a Seattle Public Utilities spokeswoman.

"Bottom line is that the water situation in Seattle is very good," she said.

"There's been a lot of rainfall to our two mountain reservoirs," Stoltzfus said, "the Cedar River Reservoir and the Tolt River Reservoir."

"Critical concern during fall is to ensure there's enough water for spawning salmon, and so far it is in good shape."
