Crew roundup: UW men win 6 of 6 on Day 1
BELMONT, Calif. — All three Washington men's crews won both of their races yesterday, positioning themselves for a shot at the championship of the two-day Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores.
The UW women's varsity and junior-varsity eights each won their afternoon match races after losing in the morning.
The Henley-style match-racing format is being used for this weekend's regatta in the Bay Area. Rather than rowing the course alongside five other boats — as is customary — each crew competes in a head-to-head format on a 2,000-meter course.
All six Washington boats will row again for the third — and final — time this morning. The third-ranked men's varsity eight races No. 6 Dartmouth, the same school the UW junior-varsity men encounter.
The UW men's varsity eight went wire to wire to post open-water victories over No. 14 Stanford and later No. 17 Michigan. The Huskies won by more than four seconds in the morning (5:42 to 5:47). They won in 6:00 to 6:16 in the afternoon.
The junior-varsity men easily beat Stanford in the morning (5:49 to 5:58), and more than doubled that margin later against UC Davis (6:06 to 6:25).
The freshman men registered Washington's two most convincing triumphs. The Huskies beat Stanford (5:57 to 6:24) in the morning and Sacramento State (6:26 to 6:58) in the afternoon.
UW women's varsity eight, ranked ninth, defeated No. 17 Texas by over a boat length, finishing in 6:50 to the Longhorns' 6:53. The junior-varsity UW women blew away Texas by over three boat lengths with a winning time of 7:03. The UW varsity and junior varsity both lost to Virginia in the morning.
UW women's novice lost both of its races, falling to UCLA (6:53 to 7:13) and Clemson (7:18 to 7:20).
Other events
• Washington won five of the seven races it entered at the Husky Invitational on Montlake Cut.
The card of 2,000-meter races included collegiate crews from UW, Washington State and Lehigh, along with numerous rowing clubs from the Pacific Northwest.
Washington's fourth varsity crew won the featured men's race with a five-second victory over Lehigh in the varsity-eight competition. The Huskies completed the course in 5:59.
Washington State finished first in the women's varsity eight in 6:51.
UW crews were also victorious in the men's junior-varsity eight (6:06), women's novice eight (7:11), women's second novice eight (7:35) and women's novice four (8:10).
WSU won the women's varsity four (7:28).
• Seattle Pacific won three races and took two seconds at the 22nd annual Blue Heron Redwood Sprints Regatta on Humboldt Bay in Eureka, Calif.
The women's varsity finished ahead of Willamette to improve to 2-1. The women's junior-varsity four finished second behind Humboldt State.
Both the novice four and junior-varsity four finished first place for the men, while the varsity four took second behind Humboldt.
• Western Washington won the women's novice eight to avoid a sweep against Gonzaga at the Blue Cup Rowing Regatta at Lake Samish in Bellingham. Gonzaga won seven of the eight events, including the featured men's and women's varsity-eight runs.
