NW briefs: Bears edge Huskies in 11 innings
The Washington baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings against California yesterday, but the Bears scored one in the 11th to beat the Huskies, 4-3, and avoid a three-game sweep at Husky Ballpark.
In the 11th, Cal (24-16, 6-6 Pac-10) had James Holder at second and Kyle Spraker at first with two outs. Mike Van Winden dropped a bloop single into left and Holder scored, narrowly beating the throw to the plate.
In the ninth, the Huskies (23-14, 4-5) had trailed 3-1 but loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Andy Lentz followed with a bloop single to shallow left field, just over the glove of third baseman Matt Einspahr, driving in two runners to tie the score at 3.
Huskies closer Josh Conover (0-1) suffered the loss.
Other baseball
• Gordon Chubb struck out 15 and did not walk a batter in the opener, and teammate Troy Martin capped a five-run second inning with a three-run home run in the nightcap as Central Washington (20-17, 2-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) rebounded to sweep a doubleheader from Saint Martin's, 8-0 and 5-3.
• Patrick Donovan pitched no-hit ball for six innings, and Gonzaga (22-13, 9-4) broke up a scoreless game late in taking a 5-1 West Coast Conference win from Portland. Donovan (5-4) went 7-2/3 innings, allowed five hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned two.
• Puget Sound (11-17-1, 4-13 Northwest Conference) dropped two to Linfield (27-5, 15-2), 8-3 and 16-5.
• Pacific Lutheran (20-10, 14-3 NWC) scored twice in the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh frame to record a 4-2 win over George Fox in the second game of a doubleheader. George Fox won the first game 10-3.
Softball
Kathy Fiske hit a grand slam and Sarah Hyatt and Dominique Lastrapes hit home runs to lead No. 24 Washington to a 12-4, mercy-rule win over No. 21 Arizona State at Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies improved to 21-14 overall and 3-5 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils dipped to 26-16, 1-9.
Caitlin Noble (8-6) earned the win, holding ASU to four hits and one run in three innings, while striking out five.
• Jackie Quint pitched Western Washington (11-14, 5-3) to a 2-1 win, snapping Humboldt State's 35-game winning streak in the nightcap of a GNAC doubleheader. The Lumberjacks won the opener 13-0.
Quint (6-5) allowed just one unearned run and three hits in the second game, striking out two and walking three in the complete-game victory.
• Whitworth (19-14, 14-8) split a NWC doubleheader with Willamette, winning the first game 4-3 and losing the second 2-1.
• Pacific swept a pair of NWC games from Pacific Lutheran, 7-6 and 10-2.
Track and field
Washington State's James McSwain won the men's university/open 100-meter dash at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., in 10.19 seconds, the second-fastest time in the world.
Norris Frederick set a UW freshman record, clearing 25 feet, 3 ¼ inches to place fourth in the long jump.
In other meet news, Marion Jones, in her first race since the Athens Olympics, finished last in the 400 meters in 55.03, nearly four seconds behind the winner.
Golf
The Washington men's team finished 10th and Washington State 15th in the 18-team field at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif.
The Huskies shot 882, including a 294 during the final round, while the Cougars finished at 895. USC ran away with team title at 6-over 846.
UW was led by James Lepp, 25th at 9-over 219. Arizona State's Pat Moore shot 2-under 208 to claim medalist honors.
Tennis
• The WSU women fell 6-1 to Oregon. The Cougars' (9-14, 0-8 Pac-10) lone win at singles was produced by Amy Toth, who put down Anna Leksinska, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9), at the No. 5 position.
• Dru Ernst pulled out a three-set victory at No. 2 singles to lead the Gonzaga men to a 4-3 victory over Idaho. Ernst beat Rob Chalkley, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, in the decisive match.
Rowing
Sam Twardowski and Anne Browning of the Pocock Rowing Center and Tyler Peterson of the Lake Washington Rowing Club won their single-sculls finals at the West Coast Speed Order Regatta near Vancouver, Wash.
Twardowski won the lightweight women's single sculls in 9:37.0, and Browning won the women's single sculls in 9:51.5.
In the men's events, Peterson finished first in the lightweight men's single sculls in 9:33.3.
• The Gonzaga women's varsity crew finished in fifth place in the Knecht Cup Grand Final in Camden, N.J. Massachusetts won in 6:43.8, and the Bulldogs came in at 6:57.

• Nikolas Besagno of Maple Valley scored his first goal in international competition as the United States' under-17 men's soccer team beat Costa Rica 2-1 to secure a CONCACAF berth for the FIFA under-17 world championship.
• Martell Webster of Seattle Prep, Snohomish's Jon Brockman and Micah Downs of Juanita all were named to the USA Today all-USA high-school boys basketball third team
