NW briefs: WWU women tie for regional title
BELLINGHAM — Western Washington overcame a six-shot advantage, shooting a final-round 305 yesterday, and tied Drury for the NCAA Division II Women's Golf West Regional title at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Drury, located in Springfield, Mo., and Western each finished with a 54-hole total of 927.
The top two teams from each of four regionals advance to the national tournament May 11-14 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Notes
• Tim Feenstra fired a 5-under-par 67, as Western leapt to the front of the tournament with a 7-under 281 in the second round of the Division II Men's Golf West Regional in Dakota Dunes, S.D. The Vikings lead by 17 shots entering today's final round.
• Washington designated hitter Curt Rindal, a sophomore from Mount Vernon, was named Pac-10 baseball player of the week after batting 8 for 15 (.533) with 12 runs batted in and three home runs in the Huskies' three-game sweep at Washington State last week.
• Six UW sailors won the Northwest Intercollegiate Sailing Association spring championship over the weekend and qualified for the national championships in Texas next month. The sailors are Brendan Fahey, Alex Jones, Erin Bell, Kate Selting, Paul Stewart and Ellie Wilson.
• Tara Jones, who played at Indiana (1998-2002), is a new assistant coach for the WSU women's basketball team.
• Emily Lau, a sophomore on the Puget Sound women's golf team, has been selected to participate at the NCAA Division III championships. Lau will be one of 10 players in the nation to compete alongside the top 10 teams at the tournament May 10-13 in Southern Pines, N.C.
• Gonzaga rowers Kari Durgan, Karen O'Hagan and Sarah Allison were named to the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association first team, and Gonzaga's Dan Gehn and Glenn Putyrae were named WIRA coaches of the year.
• Eastern Washington sophomore Holly Evans received Big Sky track athlete of the week honors after she set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:02.29 at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
