UW crew second overall, wins 3 Pac-10 races
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — California won the overall men's and women's Pac-10 rowing titles yesterday and captured both varsity eight events on Lake Natoma.
Washington was second overall in men's and women's points totals, but the UW women were a disappointing fourth in the featured varsity event.
The fourth-ranked UW men's varsity eight was second to the No . 2 Bears, who ended UW's two-year reign.
The Huskies women's team will find out tomorrow whether it gets one of seven at-large invitations to the NCAA championships. The UW men already are entered in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.
Three UW crews won titles — the undefeated men's junior-varsity eight, the men's varsity four and the women's novice eight.
The men's varsity four shell flipped just after crossing the finish line when the No. 3 seat's oar rigging broke, tipping the boat. The Huskies had come from behind to nip Cal (6:26.6 to 6:27.5) and rowers let go of their oars after crossing the line.
Cal scored 69 points to UW's 66. Cal's varsity won the 2,000-meter race in 5:39.4. The Huskies were six seats behind in 5:42.4.
Cal won the women's title with 67 points and the Huskies scored 56. Washington State was sixth with 38.
