NW brief: UW women golfers in 10th
SUNRIVER, Ore. — The 10th-ranked Washington women's golf team moved up four spots to a tie for 10th with Tennessee and Florida after the third round yesterday at the NCAA championships.
The Huskies shot 12-over 296, an improvement of 18 strokes from their disappointing second round that dropped them to 14th on the leaderboard.
UW again was led by Paige Mackenzie and Amber Prange, who both shot 73 yesterday. Mackenzie is ninth in the individual standings at 6-over 219, while Prange is 16th at 8-over 221.
Duke shot a tournament-best 6-under 278 for a 54-hole total of 873. The Blue Devils' Anna Grzebien vaulted to the top of the standings by shooting 6-under 65 to take a four-stroke lead over teammate Brittany Lang.
UW men sixth after first round
STANFORD, Calif. — The Washington men's golf team began its attempt to return to the NCAA championships for the seventh consecutive year, shooting a 6-over 286 in the opening round of the West Regional to stand in sixth place, eight shots off the lead. The top 10 teams from the 27-team field move on to the NCAAs.
The Huskies were led by Pac-10 champion Erik Olson, who shot 1-under 69 to tie for fifth and trail BYU's Oscar Alvarez by six strokes. Alvarez's 63 led the Cougars to the first-round lead at 2-under 278.
Western men seventh
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Tim Feenstra fired a 1-under-par 70 and is tied for seventh in medalist play, and the Western Washington men's golf team is tied for 11th in the team standings entering today's final round at the NCAA Division II championships.
The Vikings shot a third-round 296 for a 54-hole total of 888. Defending champion South Carolina-Aiken leads at 13-over 865.

• Washington State LB Will Derting has been selected as a second-team preseason All-American by The Sporting News.
• Jesse Johnson, Mercer Island High School senior, and David Goulet of Everett Rowing Association are among 40 high-school-aged boys invited by USRowing to attend a selection camp this summer for the junior national team, which will row at the Junior World Championships, Aug. 3-6 in Brandenburg, Germany.
• Sam Kirby a 6-foot guard from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif., has signed a letter of intent to transfer and play men's basketball at Seattle University.
• Pasco's Alissa Brasel has signed a letter of intent to play women's basketball at Alaska Fairbanks.
• Shenshakea Sanders, 15, won the national all-around title in the Women's Western National Junior Olympic Gymnastics Championships. Sanders, who trains at Auburn Gymnastics Club and is a sophomore at Federal Way High School, also won the vault and floor exercise events and was second in uneven bars in the competition held May 6-8 in St. Louis.
