Brier City Council demands resignation of Mayor Starks
Times Snohomish County Bureau
The Brier City Council last night took a unanimous vote of no confidence in Mayor Gary Starks and demanded his resignation.
Starks, who was appointed mayor 20 months ago and faces a November election, declined to resign despite an outpouring of discontent from about 70 people who crowded the City Council meeting.
Two councilmen, Carlton Gipson and Ed McClenny, were absent for the 5-0 vote.
Several former city employees, including City Clerk Paula Swisher, fired by Starks last week, testified that he has an ill temper and a history of yelling at and berating workers.
Starks denies he has a temper problem.
All five members of the city's park board resigned after Starks' decision to stay in office. Board member Ken Overstreet also quit his position as the city's volunteer webmaster.
