Train kills man near Safeco Field
Seattle Times staff reporter
A man died after being struck by a train outside Safeco Field during last night's Mariners game, authorities said.
The man, whose identity wasn't released, was struck about 9:10 p.m. by a northbound locomotive while walking across tracks at Royal Brougham Way near the east side of the stadium, said BNSF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas.
The victim was among several people who crossed after a southbound freight train had gone through the crossing, Melonas said.
It was the first train-related death in the area since the stadium opened, he added.
The engineer on the northbound locomotive blew the horn and "slammed on the brakes in an attempt to stop," Melonas said. Crossing gates were down and warning lights flashing, he said.
"When one train passes, people neglect or are unaware that there's often another train coming on the other track," he said.
The train was traveling within the 20 mile-per-hour speed limit, Melonas said.
Rescue crews treated the victim for multiple traumas, then took him to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died, said Capt. Reba Gonzales of the Seattle Fire Department.
The victim was pushing a shopping cart and wearing a Mariners shirt, authorities said. They weren't sure if had gone to the game or lived in the area.
