NW brief: Myers posts top speed in Madison Regatta qualifying
MADISON, Ind. — J.W. Myers was the fastest qualifier yesterday for the Indiana Governor's Cup unlimited hydroplane race at the Madison Regatta.
Myers, of Seattle, piloted the Miss Elam Plus to a top lap speed of 152.426 mph on the 2.5-mile Ohio River course, almost 6 mph faster than any of the four other qualifiers.
"The boat feels great," he said. "We expect to do well. This boat can get up and go."
Qualifying continues this morning. The first set of racing heats are scheduled for this afternoon, and the championship heat will be tomorrow.
Golf
Joel Dahmen of Clarkston and Dustin Poe of Spokane shot 136 over 36 holes at the junior world qualifying tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Course, the low rounds of the day. Christine Cho of Kent led the girls with a 36-hole total of 147.
Poe and Cho will join Chris Evans of Grapeview, Christopher Cho of Kent, T.J. Bordeaux of Tacoma, Paige Rachor of Bellingham, Beth Stonecypher of McKenna and Jordan Allyne of Bellevue in representing the state of Washington at the national junior world tournament next weekend at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

• Bjorn Larsen, a 2003 Pacific Lutheran graduate and native of Lake Stevens, has been selected for a berth on the U.S. world championship rowing team.
• Ryan Fischesser, a senior at Eastside Catholic High School, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at St. Mary's (Calif.).
