NW briefs: Carter maintains lead at Amateur
Fresno State's Ryan Carter fired a 4-under 67 to take medalist honors in stroke play at the 104th Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship at Lakewood's Oakbrook Golf & Country Club. Carter earned the top seed in match play, which begins today.
Carter, who was tied for the lead after Day 1, had an overall score of 132, one stroke ahead of Andres Gonzales of Olympia. Gonzales fired a 63 yesterday to earn the second seed.
Jordan Madison of Pasco was third at 134. Erik Hanson of Kirkland, a former Mariners pitcher, was fourth at 135.
Other golf
Washington golfer Paige Mackenzie shot a 2-over par 74 in the second round to take the top seed in stroke-play qualifying at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship in Federal Way.
Mackenzie, a Yakima native, had a two-day total of 5-over-par 149, and Washington State's Anastasia Kostina earned the second seed at 150. Jillian Ferrante of Battle Ground, who plays for Oregon State, took the third seed with a 151.
In the PNGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship, Leslie Folsom of Renton was in front after firing a 73 yesterday for an overall score of 151. Tarie Lebeck of Bellevue was second at 160.
• Washington senior James Lepp was in second place after the first round of the British Columbia Amateur Championship. Lepp, the two-time defending champion of the event, fired a 6-under 66 and was two strokes off the lead.
Rowing
Jesse Johnson, a Mercer Island High School senior, was named to the USRowing junior national team for the second straight year. The team will represent United States at the junior world championships, Aug. 3-6 in Germany.
• Christina Meyer was named novice coach at WSU. Meyer was an assistant coach at Harvard.
Notes
• Patty McCain is leaving her post as UW women's tennis coach to become coach at Texas. McCain replaces Jeff Moore, who resigned as Longhorns coach after 23 years.
• A 29-year-old cyclist died when he crashed near the finish line during a race at Portland International Raceway. The cyclist, whose name was not available, slammed headfirst into a steel post filled with concrete.
