NW brief: Carter rolling in Pacific Northwest Amateur golf championship
Ryan Carter of Hacienda Heights, Calif., continued his strong play by winning two matches yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 104th Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship at Oakbrook Golf & Country Club in Lakewood.
In the morning round, Carter, the stroke-play medalist, defeated Kyle Wesolowski of Graham, 3 and 2, and in the afternoon he defeated Kevin Chen of Alamo, Calif., 5 and 4.
On the opposite side of the bracket, second seed Andres Gonzales of Olympia also advanced to today's quarterfinals, where he will face Auburn's Josh Immordino, the reigning Seattle Amateur champion.
Today's quarterfinal matches begin at 7:30 a.m., and the semifinals start at noon.
Women's amateur
Yakima's Paige Mackenzie and Taylor Leon of Dallas will meet in the 36-hole final match for the 104th PNGA Women's Amateur Championship today at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way.
In her morning match, Mackenzie beat Blair Ressler of Bellingham on the first playoff hole, and finished her day with a 5-and-4 win over Kirkland's Amy Wang.
In the Mid-Amateur Championship, Lisa Smego of Olympia and Kareen Markle of Eagle, Idaho, advanced to the championship match. Smego, the defending champion, defeated Leslie Folsom of Renton 3 and 2, and Markle defeated Tarie Lebeck of Bellevue on the 18th hole.
Notes
• Five Eastern Washington players — the most among all Division I-AA schools — have been selected to the I-AA.org preseason All-America football team: MLB Joey Cwik, QB Erik Meyer, WR Eric Kimble and OT Rocky Hanni were named to the first team, and CB Isaiah Trufant was named to the third-team defense.
• Sam Taylor, University of Puget Sound women's crew coach and director of crew, has resigned his positions to return to his hometown of Portland and coach at Lewis and Clark College. During his tenure, the varsity program recorded three consecutive trips to the NCAA rowing championships, placing second in 2003 and fourth in 2004 and 2005.
• Washington State's Jay-Lee Longbottom and Maria and Anastasia Kostina, Eastern's Andrea Folk and Sheena Prante, and Gonzaga's Elizabeth Campbell, Sarah Sheffield and Sarah Clarke all have been named to the All-American Scholar Golf Team, as selected by the National Golf Coaches Association of America.
The criteria for selection to the team are a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 and competing in at least 66 percent of the school's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
• Some 20 Division I college basketball coaches are in town watching prospects play in the True Players All-Star Showcase at the Emerald City Basketball Academy at 215 Galer St. The championship game of the three-day tournament is at 3 p.m. today. Some 160 players have been participating in the NCAA-sanctioned event.
• The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced a corporate partnership with Old Spice Red Zone as the title sponsor for the Kickoff Classic. The 2005 Old Spice Emerald City Kickoff Classic will be Sept. 5 at Qwest Field.
• Gavin MacGarva of Bellevue High School has received the United States Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award, recognizing top male and female high-school scholars and athletes across the nation.
• Sports Illustrated For Kids is bringing its live aerial bike and skateboard show to Six Flags Wild Waves Enchanted Village in Federal Way on July 23-24, with show times at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. both days.
