NW briefs: U.S. advances in All Nations Cup
TUKWILA — Team USA earned a berth in the quarterfinals of the All Nations Cup men's soccer tournament last night at Starfire Sports Complex.
On the second night of first-round play, the U.S. defeated Romania 1-0 to advance from Group B. Brazil defeated Denmark 2-0 on goals from Ademar Lima and Anderson Santos to advance from Group D.
In Group C play, Mexico jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Great Britain, then fended off a spirited comeback to secure a 3-2 victory.
Eliminated from the next round were Djibouti, which lost 4-1 to Iraq; Ethiopia, which dropped a 2-1 decision to Russia; Cameroon, which was defeated 3-2 by Korea; and Peru, which fell 4-0 to Bosnia. Gambia and Japan played to a scoreless draw.
The tournament continues today through July 31.
Golf
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Washington Huskies senior Paige Mackenzie won medalist honors at the Women's Trans National Golf Association tournament at the Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club yesterday. She will be the top seed for today's match play.
Mackenzie shot back-to-back 71s to win by three strokes. Huskies junior Amber Prange had rounds of 82 and 74 for a two-day total of 156 during stroke play in the Trans Am, one of the nation's three top amateur tournaments for women.
• Chris Killmer, a June graduate of Bellingham High School who won the 2004 3A state high-school title, won a berth in the U.S. Amateur in a qualifying event in Fort Lewis. He was joined by Kevin Chappell of Fresno and former Inglemoor High School standout Ryan Keeney.
Killmer shot 69-68-137 on the par-71 Fort Lewis Golf Course. Chappell shot 68-72-140, and Keeney, who will be a senior at UNLV in the fall, shot 68-73-141.
Ex-Husky Derek Berg will be the first alternate after shooting 142.
The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

• UW's Breanne Watson has been selected to the Canadian Women's Basketball Development National Team that will participate in the FISU World University Games, Aug. 10-20 in Izmir, Turkey.
• Sarah Hirst-Smith of Pocock Rowing Center met the U.S. time standard of 6 minutes, 38 seconds in the lightweight women's quadruples sculls at special time standard race on Lake Mercer near Princeton, N.J., earning a berth in the FISA World Rowing Championships, Aug. 28 to Sept. 4 in Gifu, Japan.
