NW Briefs: Huskies' Lodree flies to hurdles victory at Indoor

Washington's Ashley Lodree clocked the seventh-fastest hurdles time in the world this year Saturday at the UW Indoor Invitational.

Hyped all week as a matchup between Lodree, Dawn Harper of UCLA and Olympic gold medalist Joanna Hayes, the women's 60-meter hurdles final became Lodree's solo showcase when Harper scratched and Hayes chose to skip the final.

That was just fine with the Huskies sophomore, who blazed to victory in 8.16 seconds, the second-fastest time in the NCAA this year. The NCAA provisional-qualifying time was just .01 seconds behind her school record.

In other results, Chris Randolph shattered his Seattle Pacific heptathlon record, winning with 5,508 points, and Northwest's Renee Wageman posted an NAIA championship automatic qualifying time by finishing the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 16.17 seconds.

Men's tennis

The No. 16 Huskies (3-0) defeated Portland with their third straight 7-0 sweep. Leading the way was Alex Slovic, who won a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 1 singles over Matt Loucks.

Swimming

Despite winning just three of 11 events, the Puget Sound women's team edged Whitworth 103-102 in Spokane. On the men's side, the Pirates beat the Loggers 138-64.

Jane Kestner (1,000 freestyle) and Beth Demander (400 individual medley) were the only individual women's winners for the Loggers. Paul Hughes was UPS's lone individual men's winner, taking the 100 breaststroke.

• The Linfield men's and women's teams defeated Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference dual meets in Tacoma. Linfield recorded a 135-61 victory in the women's meet and won the men's meet 97-90.

Notes

Tim Ellis, a Rainier Beach graduate, scored a game-high 53 points to lead the Tacoma Navigators to a 166-104 win over the Bellevue Blackhawks in an ABA game at Mount Tahoma High School. Ellis was 20 of 31 from the field, including 4 of 4 from three-point range. He added 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Luanne Mills of Seattle (women's veteran B singles), Robert Meenk of Olympia (men's senior singles) and Peter Lekisch of Anchorage (men's 65-69) all qualified for the World Indoor Rowing Championships with wins at Ergomania!, the Northwest Indoor Rowing Championships at the Seattle Center.

Other winners included Anna Mickelson, a former UW rower, in the women's open singles and Conal Groom of Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center in the men's masters singles.
