NW Briefs: Stanford shuts out No. 14 UW softball
Lauren Lappin's fifth-inning sacrifice fly scored the game's only run as fifth-ranked Stanford blanked 14th-ranked Washington, 1-0, Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium.
The Huskies (25-10, 0-2 Pac-10) threatened in the seventh inning with a leadoff double by Sarah Hyatt and a single by Aimee Minor. Stanford got out of the inning, however, with a strikeout and groundout to seal the victory.
UW rowing shines
Washington rowing won all eight races at the Husky Invitational on Montlake Cut.
The Huskies claimed the top two places in the women's varsity eight. UW's first boat finished in 6 minutes, 19.3 seconds, followed by its second entry in 6:33.8. Washington State placed third in 7:17.9.
UW also registered 1-2 finishes in the men's varsity four and novice four and women's novice eight, and wins in the women's varsity and novice fours and men's novice eight.
Other rowing
The Western Washington varsity eight won both of its races at the Northwest College Rowing Conference Invitational Regatta in Vancouver, Wash. The Vikings won the Division II race in 8:03.10, and the open eight in 3:41.30.
• The Gonzaga men's varsity crew advanced to today's Cal Cup Petite Final after a third-place showing in the San Diego Crew Classic.
Other softball
Western Washington (7-16) dropped a 6-1 decision to Cal State Bakersfield and an 8-3 game to Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif.
Men's golf
Washington stands at 10-over 586 after the first and second rounds of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational in Evans, Ga. Huskies juniors Erik Olson and Alex Prugh finished the two rounds tied for 17th at even-par 144.
Women's golf
Washington shot a 25-over 313 to stand in 12th place after the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Kim Shin led the Huskies with a 4-over 76.
Women's tennis
Washington fell to 15th-ranked Texas 7-0 in Austin. Dinka Hadzic lost a tough match to Mia Marovic at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
Track and field
Austin Abbott was among four Huskies to earn NCAA regional championships berths at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
Abbott posted a 1:49.47 in the 800 meters, becoming the first Husky to break the 1:50 mark this season. Other regional qualifiers include Carly Dockendorf (pole vault, 12 feet, 6 inches), Amanda Miller (1,500, 4:23.11) and Brad Liber (steeplechase, 9:05.25).
• Jessica Telleria improved her school-record mark in the discus (156-2) and won the hammer throw with a personal best 147-11, helping the Western Washington women win the annual WWU/Ralph Vernacchia Team Classic in Bellingham.
Western won the men's title despite winning just two of the 20 events.
• Pete Van Santa won the men's long jump (22-4 ¼) and the 200-meter dash (21.90) to lead the Puget Sound men at the Whitworth Invitational in Spokane.
