NW Briefs: Lodree, Conwell lead UW track

Washington junior Ashley Lodree ran the 10th-fastest 100-meter hurdles time in the world this year on Saturday, while senior Will Conwell achieved the year's fifth-best discus throw by an American male as the Huskies competed as a split squad in California.

One of a handful of Huskies competing at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., Lodree clocked a wind-aided time of 13.09 seconds to place fourth in the elite field, which included winner Virginia Powell of USC, a Rainier Beach High alum and the defending NCAA champion.

In other Mt. SAC results, Chris Randolph smashed Seattle Pacific's record in the decathlon, finishing third with 7,612 points. His score was 312 points higher than his previous career best and automatically qualified him for next month's NCAA championships.

Also, the Arkansas track club won the men's 400-meter relay in 38.19, the fastest time in the world this year.

At the Brutus Hamilton Invite in Berkeley, Conwell tossed the discus 198 feet, 11 inches — a 21-foot improvement over his lifetime best.

Other track and field

Molly Barnes won the javelin to highlight eight victories for Seattle Pacific at the Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg. Barnes tossed the javelin a season-best 41.26 meters.

Other SPU winners included: Amy Harris (pole vault, 3.50m), Karin Rohde (5,000, 18 minutes, 19.5 seconds), Megan Wrightmann (3,000, 11:03.91), Brandi McCoy (3,000 steeplechase, 11:54.6), Kelsey Cooley (long jump, 5.15m), Eddie Strickler (800, 1:55.28) and Brian Cronrath (1,500, 4:05.01)

Host Central Washington won both the men's and women's team titles, led by Teresa Schlafer's sweep of the women's 100 and 200, and a 1-2-3 finish in the men's 200 by Cresap Watson, Jason Roberts and Mike Kelley.

Softball

Saturday's game between No. 14 Washington and No. 1 UCLA at Husky Softball Stadium was halted by heavy rain and hail. The game will most likely resume when the Huskies play in Los Angeles on April 26.

There was no score through two full innings before rain, hail and wind gusts of up to 33 mph forced a rain delay and the eventual suspension of the game.

• Seattle University fell to Humboldt State, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, 2-0 before rain forced cancellation of a scheduled second game at Logan Field.

• Pitchers Nicole Walker and Jackie Quint each had complete-game victories as Western Washington (16-20) completed its first doubleheader sweep of the season with 6-2 and 5-1 wins over Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.

In the opener, Walker (4-7) gave up four hits, striking out four and walking four. In the nightcap, Quint (11-10) allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked one.

• Lindsay Davis drove in three runs to lift Whitworth (22-8, 17-3 Northwest Conference) to a 6-1 win over Lewis & Clark in Spokane.

Golf

The Washington men shot 292 and 291 in the first and second rounds at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif., placing the Huskies fourth at 23-over 583 headed into the final round. UCLA has the team lead at 18-over 578. Alex Prugh leads the Huskies at 2-over 142.

Gymnastics

Seattle Pacific's Sarah Sullivan placed third (9.713) and Kristin Bryant was fourth (9.700) in the vault at the USA Gymnastics national championships in Ithaca, N.Y. Both earned All-American status.

Rowing

The top-ranked Western Washington women's varsity eight remained undefeated, winning the Blue Cup in a photo finish over Gonzaga on Silver Lake. The Vikings' varsity eight completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:50.14. Gonzaga was a stroke behind at 6:50.24. Gonzaga won the other five races, including the four-boat varsity four in 7:49.23.
