NW Briefs: UW men's golf team 2nd at Pac-10 tourney
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The 30th-ranked Washington men's golf team shot 3-under 352 in the first and second rounds at the Pac-10 championship, placing the Huskies second at 6-under 704.
Defending champion Erik Olson led the Huskies' charge, shooting 4-under 67 in the first round and 1-under 70 in the second. His combined 5-under 137 is two strokes behind leader Daniel Im of UCLA. The Bruins lead the team standings at 13-under 697.
Arizona and Oregon were on the course when play was called due to darkness, so all second-round scores were unofficial.
UW's Mackenzie 2nd
ORO VALLEY, Ariz. — Washington senior Paige Mackenzie shot 1-under 71 in the first round of the Pac-10 women's golf championship, placing her third in the field, one stroke off the lead. Washington State's Ana Kostina and Arizona State's Azahara Munoz share the lead at 2-under 70.
The 27th-ranked Huskies shot 20-over 308 as a team, placing them ninth. The Cougars are sixth after a 12-over 300.
Other golf
Whitworth held off a hard charge by Linfield to win its second straight Northwest Conference tournament in Sisters, Ore. The Pirates took a four-stroke victory over the second-place Wildcats.
The Pirates' Andrew Parrott won medalist honors with a score of 149, one stroke ahead of Willamette's Dave Eaton.
• Jeff Coston of Blaine shot a 1-under 71 to hold a one-stroke lead over Michael Combs of Kennewick entering today's third and final round of the Lamb's Markets Al C. Giusti Memorial Invitational at Portland's Riverside Golf and Country Club.
Coston has a two-day total of 142 and Combs 143. Tied at 144 are former PGA Tour pro Mark Wurtz of La Quinta, Calif., and Tony Robydek of Canterwood Golf and Country Club in Gig Harbor.
The tournament is the first "major" of the year for PGA Northwest golf pros.
Track and field
Seattle Pacific's Kelsey Cooley (2,924 points) stands in second place, just ahead of teammate Linda Blake (2,874), following the first day of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference heptathlon championship in Ellensburg.
Blake won the opening event, the 100-meter hurdles (personal-record 14.72 seconds), and Cooley followed with wins in the high jump (5 feet, 3 ¼ inches) and the 200 (26.25).
Central Washington's Cresap Watson (3,491) leads the decathlon after the first five events, posting the top marks in the 100 (11.47), 400 (50.37) high jump (6-5 ½) and long jump (21-4).
• Washington's Will Conwell has been named Pac-10 men's field athlete of the week.
Notes
• An appearance by the Russian Rowing Federation highlights the field assembled for the 2006 Windermere Cup regatta, May 6 on the Montlake Cut. The Russian under-23 national team will compete in the men's eight-oared race, and a Russian national team will participate in the women's varsity eight.
