NW Briefs: Sounders' trip ends with loss to Atlanta
ATLANTA — The Seattle Sounders capped their two-game trip to the East Coast with a 3-1 loss to the Atlanta Silverbacks Saturday night in USL First Division soccer action at the Re/Max Greater Atlanta Stadium.
Atlanta's Jason McLaughlin finished the match with a five-point performance, scoring the Silverbacks' first two goals and assisting on their final goal.
Trailing 2-0 in the 71st minute, the Sounders trimmed Atlanta's lead on a goal from rookie forward Cam Weaver, with the assist from midfielder Gabe Sturm. It was Weaver's team-leading fifth goal of the season, good for second in the league.
Sounders rookie goalkeeper Chris Eylander recorded six saves.
The Silverbacks handed the Sounders (2-5-3, 9 points) their third straight road loss, the club's longest losing skid of the season.

Rowing
Crews from Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center and the Everett Rowing Association won their women's youth eight semifinals, while the Mount Baker Rowing Center boys varsity eight won its men's youth eight semifinal to lead 14 Seattle-area crews into the finals of the 2006 USRowing Youth national championships in Amelia, Ohio.
The three were among eight area crews to win their semifinals on a windswept Harsha Lake near Cincinnati at rowing's high-school national championships.
In the first semifinal of the women's youth eights, the Pocock crew outrowed the Oakland (Calif.) Strokes by more than three seconds to post the top time of 7 minutes, 11.08 seconds on the 2,000-meter course. The Everett girls varsity crew won its second semifinal in 7:14.31.
Mount Baker clocked the second-best time of the boys varsity eight event (6:20.80) in the first semifinal.
Notes
• The Cubs beat the Mariners 5-4, and the Dodgers beat the Yankees 14-5 in the All-State High School Baseball Series at Eastmont High School in East Wenatchee. In today's games, the Cubs play the Dodgers at 10 a.m., and the Mariners play the Yankees at 3:30 p.m. The series pits 72 players selected from regional all-star games around the state.
• Kyle Drabek hit a three-run first-inning homer to lead The Woodlands to a 5-3 win over Katy in the University Interscholastic League Class 5A Texas baseball championship. The Woodlands (38-1) also clinched the No. 1 national ranking by FAB 50 and Baseball America. Jackson of Mill Creek, which won Washington's 4A title, is ranked second in both polls.
• The Seattle Mountaineers defeated the host Portland Chinooks 110-108 in International Basketball League action. Rashaad Powell led six Mountaineers in double figures with 22 points.
• Kyle McGillen, a 2004 graduate of South Whidbey High School and the 2005 and '06 Great Northwest Athletic Conference outdoor long-jump champion, will transfer from Western Washington to the University of Tulsa. His twin sister, Katy McGillen, is a two-time NCAA Division I regional qualifier in the javelin at Tulsa.
