NW Briefs: Meyers rows to 2 medals at nationals

INDIANAPOLIS — Holy Names Academy junior Lindsay Meyer won gold and silver medals for Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center on Saturday at the 135th USRowing national championships.

Meyer's national title in the women's intermediate single sculls was among three golds, two silvers and a bronze won by Pocock crews leading a 13-medal performance by area rowing clubs on the first day of finals on Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis.

Meyer won the intermediate singles title in 7 minutes, 59.52 seconds, which followed her silver in the women's elite single sculls in 7:52.37.

Other winners included: Pocock's Liz Patterson and Libby Peters, who won gold in the women's elite lightweight double sculls in 7:30.28; Rachel Sung and Jill Angle, who won gold in the women's intermediate lightweight double sculls in 7:19.10, beating Pocock teammates Jill Austin and Beth Danhauer by just over three seconds; Pocock's Michelle Hall, who won bronze in the women's senior lightweight single sculls; and Kim Armstrong and Corianne Bowman of the Northwest Development Camp, who won silver in both the women's senior and OER pairs competition.

Other local USRowing national medal winners included University of Washington's Tyler Davis and Steve Full, who brought home the silver in the men's intermediate pair; and Washington's Dave Worley and Derek Devries, who won bronze in the men's elite pairs.

In the junior events, Cara Linnenkohl captured the gold (junior B single sculls, 8:23.64) and bronze (junior A single sculls, 8:24.280 for Redmond's Sammamish Rowing Association. Sammamish rowers Austin Ward and Joe Hayman won a silver in men's junior B double sculls.

Soccer

Bosnia, Brazil, Russia and the United States secured spots in the quarterfinals of the All Nations Cup at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

Competition Saturday included matches in the women's event, the Masters division and the youth games. Play continues today, with the first match kicking off at 10 a.m.

Golf

Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor shot a final-round even-par 71 to win the 100th Southern Amateur in Birmingham, Ala. Stanley, an 18-year-old Clemson freshman, had a tournament total of 275.

Stanley's performance came after he finished third in last week's Players Am in South Carolina. Two weeks ago, he won the Sahalee Invitational.

Auto racing

Garrett Evans won the Bud Pole Award for the Bud Clary Toyota 125 at Yakima Speedway in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Northwest Series.

The East Wenatchee native circled the half-mile oval in 19.196 seconds, which translates to 93.770 mph. It is his second Bud Pole this season and the 65th of his Northwest Series career.
