NW Briefs: UW rowers shine at U-23s
HAZEWINKEL, Belgium — University of Washington rowers led the United States women and Canadian men to eight-oared gold medals Sunday at the 2006 World Rowing Under-23 Championships.
The U.S. men's lightweight quadruple sculls won silver at the competition for 756 up-and-coming athletes and Olympic hopefuls representing 47 nations.
Washington coxswain Katelin Snyder guided the U.S. women's eight, which included Seattle rower Kady Glessner, to a 2.3-second, open-water victory in the marquee women's event. The Americans crossed the line in 6 minutes, 6.68 seconds, followed by Belarus in 6:08.98. Germany claimed the bronze medal in a 6:09.97.
In the men's eight, Huskies Chris Aylard, Will Crothers, Rob Gibson and Max Lang helped Canada lead from start to finish en route to a winning time of 5:30.72. Mercer Island's Jesse Johnson and Bainbridge's Island's Nate Rooks helped the U.S. to a fifth-place finish.
In other U-23 action for Northwest crews, the U.S. men's four, led by Washington freshman coach Michael Callahan, finished sixth, while Portland's Heather Johnson finished fifth in the B final of the lightweight women's single sculls.

Soccer
Columbia, Gambia, Mexico and Peru picked up wins Sunday to join the United States, Brazil, Bosnia and Russia in the quarterfinals of the All Nations Cup at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
In other action Sunday, Romania was crowned Masters champion after a 2-1 victory over Iran, and the inaugural All Nations Cup women's regional championship finished in a tie between the African and the Americas teams.
Play will resume Tuesday, with quarterfinal matches between Mexico and Colombia at 6:30 p.m.; and Brazil and the U.S. at 8:30 p.m. Russia will take on Gambia at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the Peru-Bosnia matchup at 8:30 p.m.
Auto racing
Gary Lewis dominated the field to win the Bud Clary Toyota 125 Saturday night in NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Northwest Series action at Yakima Speedway.
The win was his third of the season and the 31st of his Northwest Series career. Lewis has won multiple races in a season nine times in his 14-year career.
