NW Briefs: Linfield tops in NWC football
Linfield, winner of six straight Northwest Conference football championships, is the unanimous pick to win the league title again this season, according to the preseason coaches poll released Monday.
Linfield went 10-1 in 2005, losing in the NCAA Division III West Region finals to eventual national runner-up Wisconsin-Whitewater. Whitworth finished second in the poll, followed by Willamette, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Menlo College and Lewis & Clark.
Rowing
Several local rowers are among the 11 crews that will represent the United States at the 2006 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships, Wednesday through Saturday in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
They are: Tom Kicinski (Vashon Island) in the men's eight; Adrienne Mecham (Lake Stevens), Jennifer Cromwell (Bellevue), Sarah Gribler (Marysville) and Katelin Kelley (Seattle) in the women's eight; Hayley Johnson (Woodway) in the women's four; Michaela Strand (Seattle) in the women's pair; and Lindsay Meyer (Seattle) in the women's single sculls.

• Zane Malloy of Oak Harbor was among 14 athletes named to the U.S. Judo Junior World Championship team. The world championships are scheduled for Oct. 15-19 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
• Rainier Beach runners Djuan Piper, Jamil Wilson-Jones, LaVonte Jackson and Kent McKinney won the 400-meter relay midget boys championship in 49.82 seconds at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships on Sunday in Baltimore.
• Darren Hamilton, former athletic director at Chicago State University, has been named director of athletics at Eastern Washington.
