Girls Basketball Roundup | Juanita denied first KingCo win
KIRKLAND — Ballard rallied in the fourth quarter and survived a monster performance by Juanita's Breezy Rinehart-Young for a 56-54 KingCo 4A girls basketball victory over the Rebels Wednesday night.
Rinehart-Young, a 5-foot-11 junior, scored a season-high 21 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked four shots to put Juanita (2-12 overall, 0-10) on the brink of its first conference victory.
But Ballard (7-9, 6-6), which trailed by nine going into the fourth quarter, took the lead for good with about two minutes remaining. Kayla Williams had nine of her 17 points for the Beavers in the final quarter.
Juanita's Leigha Anderson had nine points, five assists and four rebounds.
KingCo 4A
Inglemoor 61, at Franklin 53
Inglemoor (13-3, 8-2) trailed Franklin (8-8, 3-8) by four points going into the fourth quarter, but Sarah Ena bagged 12 of her game-high 24 points in the final period as the Vikings rallied.
At Roosevelt 69, Redmond 42
Allison Reiman sparked a big third quarter by the No. 2 Roughriders with 11 of her 15 points. Mountain Division-leading Roosevelt (16-0, 11-0) led only 29-24 at halftime but outscored the Mustangs 23-7 in the third quarter. Mackenzie Argens scored 16 and Frannie Hemmelgarn had a dozen points and 14 rebounds for Roosevelt. Courtney Martin led Redmond (3-13, 1-10) with 13 points.
Garfield 56, at Lake Washington 44
The Lake Division-leading Bulldogs (12-3, 8-1), ranked 10th in the state, got 14 points each from Demarea Caples and Briana Lewis to subdue the Kangs (7-10, 4-8). Erika Wilson scored 15 for LW.
At Woodinville 56, Bothell 46
Amanda Best (22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists) and Ashley Tuiasosopo (14 points, four assists, three steals) led the Falcons (12-4, 7-4) past the Cougars (11-6, 7-5). Mandy Saintz scored 15 for Bothell.
WesCo
At Meadowdale 70, Lynnwood 40
The South-leading Mavericks (16-0, 13-0), ranked second in Class 3A, remained undefeated as Eryn Jones scored 20 points and Hanna Fjortoft had 17 against the Royals (3-14, 1-12).
Shorecrest 77, at Mariner 43
Nicole Dodson's 18 points led the Scots (7-10, 6-7) past the Marauders (3-13, 0-13) in the South. Sophomore guard Ho'okena Varde scored 13 for Mariner.
At Jackson 79, Mountlake Terrace 36
The sixth-ranked Timberwolves (15-2, 11-2 South) led 27-9 only eight minutes into the game. Kristi Kingma had 24 points, six assists and six steals and Brittany Eskridge collected 17 points and nine rebounds for Jackson.
Kamiak 46, at Edmonds-Woodway 38
Nicole Bozek, a 6-2 senior post, got 10 of her 14 points in the second half of a South Division win by the Knights (11-6, 10-3). Jennifer Singh scored 18 for E-W (5-13, 4-10).
Lake Stevens 52, at Arlington 36
Mary Ochiltree had four three-pointers among her 22 points as the Vikings (11-6, 9-4) kept the Eagles (1-16, 0-14) winless in the North.
At Snohomish 62, Everett 27
Freshman Margie Heard had 17 points and 12 rebounds in only 16 minutes for her first double-double to lead the Panthers (12-5, 11-2) past the Seagulls (2-14, 2-12) in the North.
At Oak Harbor 66, Stanwood 57
Mietra Smollack's 20 points and 13 rebounds helped the Wildcats (13-4, 9-4) overcome 26 points by Rachele Kloke of Stanwood (11-7, 8-6) in the North.
KingCo 3A
Issaquah 82, at Sammamish 34
The No. 5 Eagles (12-3, 12-0) scored 44 points off Sammamish turnovers. Ashley Martin of the Totems (1-15, 0-12) had 21 points and 13 rebounds.
At Mount Si 56, Newport 42
Madison Yakaboski scored 22 points, Jordan Wilson had 15 and Symone Shaw grabbed 17 rebounds for the Wildcats (11-6, 9-4). Yakaboski was 11 of 12 at the foul line and had 11 rebounds and six steals. Betsy Kingma led Newport (8-8, 7-5) with 21 points.
At Skyline 44, Bellevue 42
Lauren Matthews hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to lift the Spartans (13-3, 10-3) past the Wolverines (10-6, 7-5).
Metro League
Lakeside 68, at Eastside Catholic 24
The No. 6 Lions (14-3, 10-3) led 35-8 at halftime of a Mountain Division romp.
Seamount League
At Mount Rainier 46, Hazen 37
Maggie Cohen hit three three-pointers in the third quarter and scored 13 points for the Rams (9-6, 6-3). Angie Wnek had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Hazen (8-5, 5-4), which played without leading scorer Monica Nevi.
Nonleague
At Foster 81, Orting 36
Sophomore guard Shantel Carmichael had 28 points and seven rebounds, Sara Paponjak added 20 points and 12 rebounds and Lanaya Daniels contributed 16 points and six steals as the Bulldogs rolled.
