NW Briefs | UW's Slovic opens NCAAs with upset
ATHENS, Ga. — Washington senior Alex Slovic upset Illinois' 22nd-ranked Ryan Rowe, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, in the first round of the NCAA men's tennis singles championships.
Slovic's win earned him a match this morning against Notre Dame's Stephen Bass.
Rowing
• Former Washington rower Jonathan Burns and Nicole Sylvester of Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center stayed alive in their best-of-three single sculls finals with third-place finishes at the U.S. Pan American Games Trials on Mercer Lake near Princeton, N.J.
• Bob Ernst, who guided the Washington men's rowing team to the 2007 conference championship, was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year and Huskies senior David Worley, a transfer from Oregon State, was named the Newcomer of the Year. Huskies rowers named All-Pac-10: sophomore coxswain Katelin Snyder, senior Aljosa Corovic, junior Rob Gibson and Worley. Senior Cara Troelstra garnered all-conference for the Washington women's crew. Washington State junior Sarah Waterfield also was All-Pac-10.
Baseball
• Washington pitcher Nick Hagadone, a junior left-hander from Sumner, and Oregon State catcher Mitch Canham, a junior from Lake Stevens, were named to the All-Pac-10 Baseball Team.
Notes
• Senior right-hander Clayton Mortensen was West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year. Other Zags on the All-WCC team: junior third baseman Darin Holcomb, junior outfielder Shawn Wayt and sophomore first baseman Ryan Wiegand.
• Seniors Ana Gutierrez and Adam Jensen were named Student-Athletes of the Year Awards at the annual Seattle University Athletics Awards Show on Tuesday.
• Pacific Lutheran pitcher Joe DiPietro and sophomore catcher Brandon Sales were named d3baseball.com All-Americans.
