UW women rowing for NCAA title
Three University of Washington crews will race this weekend at the 11th annual NCAA women's championships, beginning today in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The Huskies received their 11th NCAA berth last week after a third-place finish at the Pac-10 championships. They finished seventh at the 2006 NCAAs.
Each of the 12 schools vying for the team championship is required to enter crews in three events: varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four. The NCAA champion is determined by combining the results from the three events.
The Washington women won bronze at the Pac-10 tournament, spurred by a first-place finish by the all-freshman varsity four. The Huskies junior-varsity crew picked up a silver medal, and the varsity eight finished in sixth place.
The Huskies will be looking for their fourth NCAA team title this weekend. Washington has not won the overall championship since 2002, when it captured the varsity and junior-varsity eight championships.
From team reports.
