NW Briefs | Pocock's Pernell wins at qualifier

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — Lia Pernell, of Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center, and Liane Malcos won their women's double sculls heat on Saturday to advance to the finals of the USRowing National Selection Regatta III on Mercer Lake.

The NSR is one of the U.S. qualifiers for the 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships, scheduled for Aug. 26-Sept. 2 in Munich, Germany.

In the women's double sculls, Pernell and Malcos defeated Potomac Boat Club's Mae Joyce Gay and Elizabeth Mygatt by 4.6 seconds to advance to the final. The winning duo crossed the line in 7 minutes, 09.20 seconds.

In the men's pairs, former Washington Huskies Giuseppe Lanzone and Alex Hearne finished just 0.19 seconds behind first semifinal winners Micah Boyd and Ted Farwell to advance, while the UW's Sam Burns and Bryan Volpenhein finished third in the other semifinal to also advance.

Former Huskies rowers Brett Newlin, Kyle Larson Scott Gault and Matt Deakin all failed to advance from the men's pairs semifinals.

Other rowing

Anna Mickelson, a former Washington rower, and Megan Cooke led from start to finish in their semifinal of the women's pair to advance to the finals of the 2007 Rowing World Cup in Linze/Ottensheim, Austria. Mickelson and Cooke were among five U.S. boats to advance to the finals.

Track and field

Ginnie Powell, a former Rainier Beach High and USC standout, won the 100-meter hurdles at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York in 12.45 seconds.

Among other results, Alan Webb blew past former Washington State runner Bernard Lagat in the final 100 meters to take the men's 1,500 victory in 3 minutes, 52.94 seconds.

Tyson Gay ran the men's 100 in 9.76 seconds — which would have been a world record, but the wind was at 2.2 mph, slightly more than the allowable margin of 2.0. Asafa Powell of Jamaica holds the record of 9.77.

Note

Latifa Ward (Foss High School, Puyallup) and Heather Cardelli (Evergreen High School, Brush Prairie) have signed letters of intent to join the Evergreen State women's basketball team next fall.
