NW Briefs | Pocock's Pernell wins easily
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — Lia Pernell of Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center and Liane Malcos rowed to a convincing 4.53-second victory over Jana Heere and Wendy Campanella of Philadelphia's Vesper Boat Club in Sunday's women's double sculls final at the 2007 USRowing National Selection Regatta III on Mercer Lake.
Leading from start to finish, Pernell and Malcos rowed to a winning time of 7 minutes, 11.14 seconds on the 2,000-meter course.
With the win, Pernell and Malcos receive an automatic invitation to the USRowing camp that will determine the U.S. women's quadruple sculls entry for the 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships, Aug. 26-Sept. 2 in Munich, Germany.
"We wanted to push hard for the first 1,000 meters and lay down the rhythm from the beginning," said Pernell. "It was a fun race and a very solid weekend of racing."
In other NSR competition, former University of Washington rower Giuseppe Lanzone missed a men's pair bid for the U.S. national team with a third-place finish in the final. Former UW rower Sam Burns and Seattle's Bryan Volpenhein were sixth.
Other rowing
Former Washington rower Anna Mickelson and Megan Cooke of Los Gatos, Calif., came from behind in the women's pair final to capture the silver medal at the 2007 Rowing World Cup in Linz/Ottensheim, Austria.
Australia captured the gold in 7:09.39, with the Americans coming in at 7:10.49.
For Mickelson, a three-time NCAA champion at Washington and 2004 Olympic silver medalist, the silver was her sixth medal in World Cup competition.
Michelle Guerette was the other medal-winner for the United States, bringing home the bronze in the women's single sculls.
Note
• Returning national champion Jonte Willis of Tacoma advanced in the super-heavyweight division of the U.S. Boxing Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., posting a 21-7 win over Andre Carthon of Northridge, Calif., in the preliminary round.
