NW Briefs | Crews from Australia, Poland to take on UW

A men's crew from the Polish Rowing Federation and women's crews from Navy and the University of Melbourne in Australia will provide the competition for Washington Huskies varsity crews in the Windermere Cup races, set for the opening day of boating season May 3.

The UW men's varsity is the defending national collegiate champion.

Races are scheduled to begin at 10:20 a.m. that Saturday, and the regatta includes other local and non-local college, community and club rowing teams.

College baseball

Washington State junior Ross Humes has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award preseason watch list. The award is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I.

A Federal Way native, Humes is one of 40 pitchers on the list and one of seven left-handers. Last season, Humes set the WSU season saves record with 12, and he's tied for second on the Cougars' career list with 13.

The winner will be announced June 4.

College tennis

Washington State's women's tennis team, thanks to freshman Jessica Gomez's win in the final match of the day, defeated Boise State 4-3 Wednesday in Pullman.

The Cougars improved to 8-1 overall.

College soccer

WSU's women's soccer team announced its 2008 recruiting class, with seven players signing letters of intent.

The signees are midfielder/forward Alana Amack (Pleasanton, Calif.); forward Megan Chapin (Seattle); defender Alison Fenter (Spokane); midfielder Megan Murphy (Anchorage, Alaska); goalkeeper Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, Ariz.); forward Tiara Pittman (Spokane) and midfielder Jacquelyn Roth (Gilbert, Ariz).

Chapin went to Garfield High School, where she led KingCo 4A in scoring as a junior. Fenter was Shadle Park's MVP four years in a row.

• Western Washington announced five players who have signed letters of intent to play for the Vikings' teams. The three men's recruits are all midfielders: Tyler Bjork from Kirkland's Juanita High School, Matt Dutson from Rogers (Puyallup) and Oscar Jimenez from Mount Vernon. The women's recruits are D Alicia Patten from Seattle's Holy Names and MF Emily Warman from Sedro-Woolley.
