This semi-rural school district, a 35-minute ferry ride from Seattle, posts some of the state's highest test scores and enjoys strong parent and community support.

All the district's schools rank high in state and national achievement standards and three-quarters of its teachers hold master's degrees or higher.

Two community groups -- the Bainbridge Education Support Team and the Bainbridge Public Schools Trust -- raise supplemental funds for the district.

Superintendent: Ken Crawford has guided the district since July 2002 after serving four years as deputy superintendent.

Alternative/home school programs: Parent-partner option through Home-School Support Program and Eagle Harbor High.

The numbers: 1.5% African-American, 4.8% Asian-American, 2.4% Hispanic, 1.3% Native American, 90% White; 5% low-income, 13.9% special-education, .7% ESL.

Funding: The $6.1 million technology levy request and a $45 million bond measure were approved in 2006. An operations levy was ratified with 76 percent approval in February 2007.
