School highlights Key to terms »
Top highlights
  • Green Lake is an Advanced Learning Opportunity (ALO) school. ALO targets all students (APP, Spectrum) and students who, in the teacher's opinion, are working consistently one year or more above grade level. Extra projects and more advanced learning options are offered these students, who are served in an inclusion program.
  • Students loop in grades 1-2 and grades 3-4. This means students remain with the same teacher for two grade levels. This program has been extremely successful for our students and their families. Teachers, students and parents truly form a team to educate our students and meet their needs over a two-year timespan.
  • Green Lake School has two "open-concept" pods that contain multiple classrooms. This is a highly effective configuration for regrouping students, having students work cross-grade level, and building team teaching among teachers.
  • Green Lake School has used the Everyday Mathematics curriculum from the University of Chicago in all classrooms K-5 for the past four years. Our math WASL scores have risen 31 points since 2002, the year before we began using Everyday Math. In 2007, 81.4% of our 5th grade students were at Standard or above in mathematics.
Before/after school activities for elementary grades
Tuition-based before- or after-school care offered? yes
Green Lake All-Stars: before-school sports program. Wakes you up and gets you ready to learn! Lunchtime Gym Class Heroes for sports at noon. Drama Club, Art Club, Chess Club, Spanish Club all sponsored by PTA. Before and after school day care offered at GLSA, across the street.
What is your school doing to improve student achievement?
Our Academic Achievement Plan targets mathematics and writing in all curricular areas. We have university and high school tutors work with students before, during and after school to assist students not meeting Standard. Some of our students who are below Standard in these areas qualify for assistance from our LAP (Learning Assistance Program) teacher four days per week. See previous comments regarding the Everyday Mathematics program and ALO.
Special programs
Green Lake is delighted to be the home of Team A and the Team A pre-school. These self-contained special education classes serve students from 3-12 years old. The students served are severely and profoundly medically handicapped. We are also a Physical and Occupational Therapy site for Seattle Public Schools. In addition, we house students within the Aspergers/Autism spectrum.
Other information Key to terms »
Green Lake School has a fantastic swimming program! Every K-5 student receives approximately 10-12 swim lessons throughout the year taught by our school's swim coach and PE specialist. Green Lake School also has a full-time nurse on-site.
