What is your school doing to improve student achievement?
Daily reading at home at the "just right" reading level is expected and supported with take home books from kindergarten through 5th grade. With the help of PTA funding and a Bellevue Chamber of Commerce grant, math support has been offered during and after school for students who need extra support. Newport Heights is also an Ackerley Partner School through the University of Washington College of Education. This affiliation gives the school access to apply for grant money that is used to conduct action research and build teacher capacity, thus improving student learning. The Ackerley Group also provides teachers access to educational seminars. Finally, the UW places numerous student teachers at Newport Heights and holds "Studio Days" at NHE. These are both great extra support resources for our students.
Special programs
Newport Heights uses a full-day kindergarten/1st grade model in which students at grades K and 1 are grouped together in all subjects except math. There is a separate AM half-day kindergarten class that may be available if student enrollment is large enough to justify offering the program. The Beginning English Language Learner (ELL) Center Program will continue to be housed at Newport Heights. This half-day program draws beginning ELL students from Eastgate Elementary, Somerset Elementary and Newport Heights.
Significant changes at the school
The Math Expressions program replaces Math Investigations as the K-5 Bellevue School District Mathematics Curriculum beginning in 2008-09. The Special Education Center Program formerly housed at Enatai Elementary School has moved to Newport Heights beginning in the 2008-09 school year. The Newport Heights Special Education Center Program will serve approximately half of the students in the Bellevue School District who qualify for this program - with other half of the qualified students attending Sherwood Forest Elementary.
